“Therefore the redeemed of the LORD shall return, and come with singing unto Zion; and everlasting joy shall be upon their head:
they shall obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and mourning shall flee away” (Isaiah 51:11).

Pottermania Sweeps the Nation!

by Rick Tyler

It is always a fascinating, albeit sickening phenomenon, whereby a new sensational, ultra-hyped production rolls off the assembly line of that degenerative cesspool known as Hollywood. In such instances, the hive mind of the nation is activated and energized by those Satanic puppetmasters who reign and rule over the masses of the body politic from the lofty perches of their ivory towers. First, the public is teased and tantalized...often months in advance...about the forthcoming extravaganza. They are baited by slick and sophisticated Madison Avenue techniques of manipulative conditioning. They are taught to love and yearn for the offering or product which they haven’t yet seen. And...in most cases, the children of the land are smothered with an avalanche of promotional propaganda, the effect of which is to convince them beyond question, that they simply must rush the gate in a screaming frenzy the very instant that the new production is made accessible to the clamoring public! Every year brings with it new, record smashing box office sensations. Hundreds of millions of dollars are squandered by legions of movie goers. It would be unthinkable to not storm the local theatre in order to sit and stare, transfixed, at the silver screen. Kids absolutely must view the new production in its opening days. To fail in this regard...God forbid...would mean that they weren’t cool. Their status of approval and acceptance might be jeopardized in the midst of that all important standard and measure of all that is good and worthy in life...the peer group!

In recent days, the phenomena just described have transpired and unfolded via the arrival of the fictional literary character, Harry Potter, in the larger than life world of the cinema. Prior to now, the Harry Potter books that have been written by British author J.K. Rowling, have managed to sweep the planet, being read in 200 nations and in over 40 languages. In recent weeks, Harry has made his Hollywood debut, and his popularity has now soared into the stratosphere! Masses of individuals...young and old...are marching in lock step concerning their love and avid devotion to the Harry Potter craze.

Although Harry Potter only exists in an imaginary world, he is nevertheless, a very powerful character in the lives of vast multitudes. Imaginary figures of this nature have a way of becoming cultural icons, and their status of being tangibly non-existent makes them resistant if not immune from criticism. If someone dares to suggest that Harry is a bad influence on children, they are sneered at and reminded in a belittling manner that the focus of such criticism is only make believe. Former education secretary William Bennet ran into a similar briar patch years ago when he sought to enter in to an abstract form of dialogue with another potent fictional character named Bart Simpson. Bennet was lampooned and ridiculed for talking to and about Bart as though he were a real kid. What is truly amazing, however, is that these make believe personages are actually far more powerful and influential than any real life counterpart could ever hope to become!

For those who happen to be ignorant when it comes to the matter of Harry Potter trivia, the winsome young bespectacled lad is an orphan whose parents were killed by the evil Lord Voldemort. Harry’s parents were practitioners of "white magic" while Voldemort was formerly an undisputed master of the "Dark Arts." Lord Voldemort has previously attempted to unleash a curse on Harry, but it backfires on him with devastating consequences. Due to the sacrificial goddess magic of his mother’s love, Harry’s blood is endowed with magical powers and he is saved from death. He is, however, left with a strange lightning bolt marking on his forehead. The imagery that is brought forth in the Harry Potter stories is not the mere product of innocence and imagination. J.K. Rowling happens to be a graduate of mythology studies from England’s Exeter University, and is thoroughly familiar with methodologies of the occult, as well as the philosophical and elemental underpinnings of various pagan religions, witchcraft, and even Satanism.

Much of Harry’s existence is a question mark until he reaches his tenth year. Then, at age eleven, he goes to a renowned one thousand year old instructional institution known as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Once at Hogwarts, Harry and his fellow students are instructed by the faculty in the proper and effective use of spells, rituals and other magical tools. An example of the kind of magical props that are employed by both Harry and the evil Lord Voldemort is the tail feather of the phoenix of ancient mythology. It is quite apparent that this point of commonality between the two adversarial parties is representative of the fact that their mutual powers emanate from the same source...despite the fact that one practices "white magic" and the other the "dark arts."

Harry’s last name is itself a symbolic statement concerning the character and quality of the stories in question. "Potter" is the female goddess of Babylon who is considered to have created humanity from clay. The name also means a pagan witch. It is certainly no coincidence that this name has been selected for the main character of these enthralling stories. Scripture informs us in 2 Corinthians 11:14, "And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light." Clearly, the name Potter is symbolic of what Harry really is. The viewing public sees him as a winsome youngster who is endowed with fantastic magical powers. He is a practitioner of "good" magical techniques and his devotion is against the ostensible forces of evil. The fact is, though, that the Bible condemns any and all forms of magic, witchcraft, wizardry, etc. It is all an absolute abomination to God, regardless of the manner in which it is presented, practiced, or undertaken. Deuteronomy 18:10-14 says, "(10) There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, (11) or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer, (12) for all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee. (13) Thou shalt be perfect with the Lord thy God. (14) For these nations, which thou shalt possess, hearkened unto observers of times, and unto diviners: but as for thee, the Lord thy God hath not suffered thee so to do." In Exodus 22:18 scripture states, "Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live." Yes...the Bible prescribes the death penalty for those who would become practitioners of witchcraft...but instead, our society gushes forth with profuse praise, adoration, and monetary enrichment!

In her writing of the Harry Potter stories, J.K. Rowling incorporates such imagery and elements as shape changing, meditation, human sacrifice, the common tools of witchcraft, reincarnation, spells, curses, and communication with the spirit world. She portrays in a favorable light such things as children being recruited into and dabbling in the practice of divination, sorcery, and other aspects of the teaching of the dark arts. While a chorus of naysayers is insisting that this is all just harmless fun, Satan is reaping a windfall of benefit and positive public relations. To proclaim that something which God expressly condemns and forbids is acceptable, as long as it is presented in the context of a fantasy realm, is both a specious and preposterous line of argumentation.

Would the same twisted line of reasoning be offered concerning a fantasy presentation that featured gratuitous sex or pornography? Those who are acting as advocates and cheerleaders for Harry Potter need to consider the words of Matthew 18:6 which read, "But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea." Verse seven goes on to say, "Woe unto the world because of offences! For it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!" Indeed...those who are promoting and leading children into the dark fantasy world of the Harry Potter stories have profuse quantities of blood upon their hands...and especially those who simultaneously call themselves Christian!

A great deal more could be written in condemnation of the Harry Potter phenomenon. The fact that we must even take the time to make what should be such an obvious observation...namely, that the subject matter in question constitutes an abomination which should be shunned and avoided...is in and of itself, a sad and tragic commentary concerning the society in which we live. In the world of Harry Potter, those who are using the powers of the occult are the good guys and heroes. In other words, goodness and virtue find their expression in the occult, which for the true Bible believer is a total perversion of truth and an absolute inversion of morality! Only a complete fool would deny that Harry Potter promotes an alluring interest in magic and the occult. For this reason alone, any and all responsible parties should do all that is within their power to speak against and condemn the acceptance of this latest example of gross satanic corruption within our once great nation and culture.

“The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness,
and let us put on the armour of light” (Romans 13:12).
